Generating Tartan Patterns

Generating Tartan Patterns

Day two of the Genuary24 challenge for generative artists asked us to create artworks using the prompt “No palettes: Generative colors, procedural colors, emergent colors”. I decided to try generating Tartan patterns using random distributions for the tartan’s pivot positions and to play with adding more colors (let’s try three, four or even more).

This blog post is part of the Genuary 2024 series. It has a corresponding Github repository: genuary/2024/02-no-palette/s02a_tartans.

I decided to start using a Pareto distribution as I thought it would generate results more pleasing to the eye than others, like a random distribution. For warp and weft I used two by two units (threads). I started using two random colors.
